Sueet nothing: the real meaning of "clean"

Sueet nothing: the real meaning of "clean"

“Clean” is one of the most overused words in beauty.

It sounds good—safe, minimal, natural—but here’s the thing: it doesn’t actually mean anything. Not officially, anyway.

There’s no governing body that defines what makes a product “clean.” It’s a marketing term. And depending on who’s using it, it might mean:

  • free from parabens
  • vegan
  • not tested on animals
  • essential oil–only
  • or just vibes

At Sueet Skin, we use the term sparingly—and deliberately.

Here’s what it means to us:

SAFE FOR SKIN

Every ingredient we use is permitted for cosmetic use in Canada. That means it’s been evaluated for safety by Health Canada, and used at concentrations considered non-toxic and non-irritating. We don’t chase trendy red lists, but we also don’t use ingredients with known or credible safety concerns.

MINIMALIST BY DESIGN

Fewer ingredients means fewer things to react to, and more transparency for you. We don’t throw in a trendy botanical just to make the label look impressive. Every ingredient has a purpose—our hero tallow balm has fewer than ten total ingredients.

THOUGHTFUL SOURCING

We aim for traceability and sustainability, but “clean” sourcing is complicated—and the truth is, every ingredient has a footprint. So while no supply chain is perfect—we believe in transparency and continuous improvement.

What we don’t do in the name of being clean:

NO GREENWASHING

We use tallow—a byproduct of the meat industry. Cows aren’t raised for skincare and we believe in using what would otherwise go to waste. But we also recognize that scale changes impact, and we’re committed to continuously reassessing our sourcing and our footprint as we evolve.

NO FEAR-BASED MARKETING

We don’t villainize ingredients just to ride a trend. Natural doesn’t always mean safe. Synthetic doesn’t always mean harmful. Context matters. We don’t deal in absolutes—we deal in context.

NO PERFECTION POSTURING

“Clean” isn’t a finish line. It’s a practice. We’ll keep refining, questioning, and improving what we do. That's the promise.

SO WHAT IS CLEAN BEAUTY?

It’s what you make of it. For us, it’s about clarity, not fear. Function, not fluff. And always: respect for the skin.
